The four best entrance directions
Vastu divides the compass into 16 zones, and the main door is judged not only by direction but by the exact position within that direction. As a starting point, these four are the most favourable:
- North-East (Ishanya) — the most auspicious. Linked to clarity, positivity and spiritual energy.
- North (Kubera) — wealth, cash flow and career opportunities.
- East (Indra) — health, recognition, social connections and the energy of the rising sun.
- West — a workable, often favourable option in the right sub-position, linked to gains and rewards.

Is a north-facing or east-facing main door better?
Both are favourable, so the honest answer is: it depends on the occupants. A north-facing door emphasises wealth and career opportunity; an east-facing door emphasises health, recognition and relationships. Which one serves you best is decided by your birth chart — the same direction does not behave identically for everyone.
What if my main door faces south or south-west?
Don't panic. A south or south-west entrance is not automatically inauspicious. Vastu reads the door at the level of the 32 entrance sub-positions (padas), and even a "difficult" direction has favourable padas. Where a door truly sits in a weak position, it is corrected with remedies, not construction.
Typical no-demolition remedies for a main door include:
- A corrected threshold, nameplate and door colour for the direction.
- Placement of the right element, symbol or metal strip near the entrance.
- Lighting and cleanliness at the door — a cluttered, dark entrance drains any direction.
- Activating a favourable "virtual door" or energy point where the physical door cannot move.
