Main Entrance

The main door is where energy enters your home, which is why Vastu treats it as one of the most important elements. North, northeast, and east-facing entrances are traditionally considered the most auspicious — they invite prosperity, clarity, and the fresh energy of the rising sun.

But a south or southwest entrance is not a curse. The exact position of the door within the wall, and whether it's kept clean, bright, and welcoming, matters just as much as the compass direction.

Do

Keep the entrance area well-lit and clutter-free.
Fix any squeaking or sticking so the door opens smoothly and fully.
Add a nameplate and, ideally, a small plant beside the door.
Ensure the door opens inwards and clockwise where possible.

Avoid

Shoe racks, dustbins, or broken items right at the entrance.
A dark, unlit, or cramped entryway.
The door directly facing a staircase going down or a toilet.
Dead plants or dried flowers near the door.

Quick Remedy

For a south or southwest-facing entrance, add a bright light above the door and place a healthy green plant on each side. A brass or metal nameplate and a clean doormat in an earthy tone help ground and balance the energy — no construction needed.

Kitchen

The kitchen is governed by Agni, the fire element, so Vastu places it most naturally in the southeast — the fire zone. The next best option is the northwest. What matters most is the direction you face while cooking: east is considered ideal, as it aligns with the energizing, health-giving energy of the sun.

The most common issue we see is a kitchen in the northeast, which is meant to stay light and pure. This is very correctable without moving a single wall.

Do

Position the stove so you face east while cooking.
Keep the cooking range in the southeast corner of the kitchen.
Store drinking water and the sink toward the north or northeast.
Keep the kitchen clean, bright, and well-ventilated.

Avoid

Placing the stove and sink directly next to or facing each other (fire vs. water).
The gas stove directly under a window or in the exact corner.
Dark, gloomy colours on the kitchen walls.
Storing broken or unused appliances in the kitchen.

Quick Remedy

If your kitchen is in the north or northeast, introduce warm tones — red, orange, or yellow — in the décor, and position the stove so you cook facing east. Keeping the northeast corner of the kitchen especially clean and adding a small copper vessel of water helps rebalance the elements.

Bedroom

For the master bedroom, Vastu strongly favours the southwest — the earth zone — because it offers stability, security, and deep, restful sleep. Just as important is the sleeping direction: pointing your head to the south or east while you sleep is recommended, while the north is traditionally avoided for the head position.

Children's and guest bedrooms are more flexible, and can work well in the east, west, or northwest depending on the occupant.

Sleep with your head pointing south or east.
Place the master bed in the southwest corner of the room.

Storing clutter, shoes, or broken items under the bed.
A beam running directly over the bed where avoidable.

Can't move the bedroom? Simply repositioning the bed so your head points south, choosing calmer colours, and removing any mirror that faces the bed will improve the room's restfulness immediately — no structural change required.

Bathroom & Toilet

Bathrooms are best placed in the northwest or west, where the flow of waste water sits comfortably with the natural energy of the zone. The placement to correct most carefully is the northeast, since the sacred zone shouldn't hold waste outlets.

This is one of the most over-worried topics in Vastu. A less-than-ideal bathroom position is common and almost always manageable with simple upkeep and remedies.

Do

Keep the bathroom door closed when not in use.
Ensure strong ventilation and keep the space dry.
Keep the toilet lid down and drains covered.

A bathroom door directly facing the kitchen or pooja room.
Leaving the space damp, dark, or poorly aired.
Storing the bathroom directly above the pooja room or kitchen.
Ignoring leaks — dripping water is symbolically draining.

Quick Remedy

For a northeast bathroom, keep the door closed, place a bowl of sea salt inside and refresh it periodically, keep the space impeccably clean and dry, and ensure good ventilation. These simple steps neutralize most of the concern — relocation is rarely necessary.

Staircase

A staircase is a heavy structural element, so Vastu prefers it in the southwest, south, or west — the zones that can carry weight. It should ideally ascend in a clockwise direction. The northeast is the one placement to avoid, since a heavy staircase there presses down on the lightest, most sacred zone of the home.

Because you usually can't relocate a staircase, most of the work here is about light, colour, and how you use the space beneath it.

Keep the staircase in the southwest, south, or west where possible.
Ensure the stairs ascend clockwise.
Light the stairwell well and keep it in good repair.

A staircase in the exact centre (Brahmasthan) or northeast.
A pooja room, kitchen, or toilet tucked under the stairs.
Broken steps, loose railings, or an unlit stairwell.
Cracks left unrepaired on the staircase.

Quick Remedy

For a northeast or awkwardly placed staircase, keep the area beneath it completely empty and clean rather than using it for storage, add bright lighting, and paint the stairwell in light, uplifting colours. A small water feature or image near the base can also help lift the energy.
